Hair
Yes....I cut my own hair. No....I've never been to beauty school. It's not great, and there are definitely "learning experiences," but I figure after a few years or so, I'll have the cut I want down well enough to pull it off. This is the video that inspired me to just go for it. The undercut really simplifies things, and from there, it's just a matter of getting the top shaped the way I want it. One day, I'll splurge and get some feathering shears, but in the mean time, I'm not a particularly vain person.
Natural Yeast
Anyone can make their own bread, but it's a whole new level of DIY to make your own yeast.
This is Boss.
Yes, my yeast starter has a name. It's easier to take care of him that way. He lives in my fridge and when I need to make bread, I take him out, feed him, take a clone for the bread, and then put him back in the fridge to rest for another 3 or 4 days.
I got him as a start from a local readiness group. The original culture was started back in 1912 in Czechoslovakia and passed from kitchen to kitchen since then.
The one book I have on cooking with natural yeast is The Art of Baking With Natural Yeast. It's a pretty good resource.
I did try making my own start before I got Boss. It worked, but my ability to bake with it wasn't up to par at the time, and new starts can be quite tangy, so I didn't keep poor Nemo very long. I might attempt my own start again after I learn how to grow my own wheat. It's a dream of mine to learn to make bread from land to table with only what I produce myself.
Yogurt
Because it's cheap and easy and there's almost no reason not to! Here's how I make it.
